When it comes to art, there are no rules, only guidelines and methods. Graphic Design also has a set of guidelines, such as Hierarchy, Contrast, Simplicity, and Consistency; but these guidelines aren’t always meant to be used. It is important to constrain yourself to guidelines, but breaking them allows even more exploration, innovation, and creativity to blossom.
We are seeing more and more brands utilizing minimalistic and simplified logos, gravitating towards clean lines and simple shapes. For some brands, simplistic branding makes sense, but your brand’s style must coincide with the personality you want your brand to emit. Simplicity doesn’t equate to a one-size-fits-all solution. Not every brand needs to be presented in a sophisticated manner.
Defy using flat colors, and re-explore the use of gradients and depth. Flat colors, though straightforward and clear, might not always convey the dynamism and energy that certain brands exude. Gradients can add a sense of movement to your design. Think about the impact of gradients and the emotions and feelings they convey. A logo with a warm gradient can give off the feeling of heat and excitement, while a cool gradient can create a calming feeling. While flat colors can convey these same feelings, the use of gradients not only makes it more eye-catching but can evoke stronger feelings than just flat colors.
Adding dimensionality to your designs helps create a more immersive story for your brand. Utilizing visual depth can help create a sense of tangibility and interactivity to a static image.
Texture is often overlooked and can add to the dimensionality and tangibility of your designs. Whether it’s the graininess of paper, the smoothness of glass, or the ruggedness of wood, incorporating textures can infuse your design with a multi-sensory experience. For a tech-oriented brand, a sleek metallic texture might convey modernity, while a more organic texture could suit an eco-friendly brand. It’s all a strategic way of enriching your brand.
Typography is the center stone of a design, while the minimalist type is simple and clean to read, it might not be very memorable. Play with bold lettering, and unconventional fonts, or even incorporate handwritten elements to give your brand a unique voice.
Rules and guidelines are a great baseline, but the real magic happens when you dare to break free from their constraints. We cannot innovate without pushing the boundaries. Redefining and defying the norms creates designs that aren’t only eye-catching, but leave a lasting impression on the mind. The most remarkable designs often originate from challenging the status quo.
